REVIEW: Joico Moisture Recovery Treatment Balm UPDATE

 Joico Moisture Recovery Treatment Balm

I’m new to Joico’s extensive range of hair products, but as they have near legendary status and a lot of glowing reviews on the net, I thought I should see what all the fuss is about, plus my contrary hair is in dire need of a moisture boost.

Joico Moisture Recovery Treatment Balm

This intensive moisture treatment contains Hydramine Sea Complex as well as murumuru, olive and shea butters to aid in the recovery of hair’s natural elasticity while soothing the cuticle and promoting softness and shine.
Thick, coarse, dry and frizzy hair emerges revitalised, moisturised and smoothed with increased elasticity.
Use Joico Moisture Recovery Treatment Balm for Thick/Coarse Dry Hair 2-3 times a week.

After washing hair, apply Moisture Recovery Treatment Balm, and leave in for five minutes before rinsing.

This is the only product I use after doing a mask containing protein. Moisturises the hair like a dream and makes styling significantly easier as hair is very silky.

I’ve been using once a week for 3 weeks now and my hair is amazingly soft at all times! I’m African-American with natural shoulder length hair that I usually wear in twist outs or other stretched styles. My strands are fine, but I have a ton of hair. Since using this conditioner I don’t need to constantly re-apply moisturising product throughout the week, my hair is shiny, and my styles look amazing.

I have very kinky African-American hair in tight coils that is difficult to detangle. I had a lot of trouble going longer than 2 months without a relaxer until I used this. Now I am able to go 3 months and still comb through my new growth. My hair also holds onto moisture more during the week.

First of all, I am African-American and I swear by this stuff… along with the Joico Silk Result shampoo (discontinued) and conditioner, this allows me to stretch out time until my next relaxer on my 4a/4b textured hair. My hair is kinky, thick-wiry, and I have very dry scalp. This helps smooth down my hair weightlessly and infuse into it cationic hydration and botanical/marine moisturisers – not mineral oil as a cheap filler.

My hair got very coarse as I got older and white hair grew in. I tried everything to get it to “sit down” instead of looking thick and frizzy, including using natural treatments like eggs and olive oil. When I ordered this hair conditioner (along with the Joico Silk Result shampoo) I finally hit on the thing that worked! My hair is smooth, silky and shiny again!

This mask is perfect for all kinds of hair. I have fine and dry hair and I use it almost everyday. My mom has a curly and thick hair and she loved too! But I use it only for 3 minutes, because my hair becomes heavy. It leaves the hair soft, shiny and stronger.

This is the best product I have ever used for my thin, fine dry hair (it says it’s for thick hair, but works well on mine). I only have to use a small amount. It has saved me from buying other products.

I have used the K-Pak treatment forever, but decided to give this a try. Immediately after I hopped out of the shower, something felt wrong with my hair. I ignored it and went on with my day. A few hours later I couldn’t get over how disgusting my hair felt, so I checked it out in a mirror and it looked like someone drenched my hair in oil.
I ran home quick to wash my hair in my sink, not even bothering to use conditioner, which did absolutely nothing. My husband even asked what the hell happened to my hair. I got back in the shower, washed it THREE times (again, not using conditioner after) and still nothing has changed.
I read similar reviews online where people got greasy results and couldn’t get it out of their hair no matter how hard they tried. I definitely wouldn’t recommend this. It does work for some people, but it’s not worth it to see if it does.

Well, I used this treatment balm for the first time this morning and my hair immediately became softer and easier to manage, even after lots of rinsing. Have you noticed how some conditioners seem to ‘wash out’ and vanish after rinsing? This one didn’t and my hair was smooth enough to comb through without using my Tangle Teezer. It’s very early days, but this is definitely a promising start.

Joico Moisture Recovery Treatment Balm 250ml £11.15 Feel Unique (updated 29/1/15)

Six months on and I thought there wasn’t a conditioner made that could ever compete with my vast collection of Kérastase products, but this one is right up there with the best Kérastase has to offer.

Mositure Recovery is the perfect accompaniment to Joico K-Pak Reconstructor, but I also apply a teeny blob of it every day with whatever conditioner I’m using. My hair doesn’t feel right or smooth if I don’t use it.

As I’ve said below in the comments section, it can leave a tiny trace of film on your hair, but it’s not at all greasy or obvious. In my opinion, it makes hair feel even smoother. I think the key is not to use a lot of it unless you’re specifically applying it as a moisturising hair treatment.

Thank you for this review – I have used Joico products in the past (e.g. K-Pak), but this is new to me. I am tempted to try it because it seems to work for women with fine hair also. By the way, I was tickled by your category ‘drama queen hair’. Some reviewers are rather ahem, attention-seeking! I do read a lot of reviews before purchasing new products, but I automatically ignore those from people who claim to have experienced either miraculously good results overnight, or those who are borderline hysterical about how bad a product is.

      Hi Niki,
Thanks for commenting. I like to use a product at least 12 times before I post a definitive review. The Reconstructor was bizarre, my hair really did eat it up, but did it do any good? I’ll take another crack at it, there’s a reason it’s got a cult status surely?
I’ve gleaned a lot of tips and tricks from reviewers which is why I quote them. I’m loathe to say it, but Miss Borderline Hysterical up there does have a teeny point – the balm definitely leaves a trace of ‘film’ on the hair. I used it again this morning and rinsed like crazy, but it was still there. It’s certainly not greasy and again, even dry, it does feels different and smoother. I didn’t use any other styling product on my hair and my ends, which tend to go ratty and crispy on me, feel fuller. I’m going to use this exclusively for the next few weeks and see what happens.

Update: I’ve been using this regularly and I can say it’s now one of my favourite conditioning treatments. So much so, that I’ve just bought a huge 500ml tub from Beauty Bay for £15.80.
