UPDATE: 26th April 2014
I really do like these self tan wipes but you have to use them with care. The payoff is a very natural looking tan, but I can appreciate that some people might not want to invest the time it takes to master the application.
If one towelette contained just the right amount of self tan for the “face, neck and décolleté,” then yes, it really would simply be a case of using the wipes as directed.
The problem is that there is simply too much product in each towelette. I promise you there isn’t a person alive who could use a whole wipe on their face, the colour is far too intense.
CUT IT DOWN:
Bear in mind I’m pale skinned and only want a whisper of ‘healthy colour.’ The sheets are tiny, 8cm (3 inch) square. A lot of reviewers have said they only need half a sheet, but I find even that was too much. I had to cut mine into thirds, which made for an impractical and impossibly small strip of tan wipe to work with.
As the tan isn’t tinted, you can’t see where you’ve applied the product, so you have to work incredibly fast to ‘blend’ it in.
I would recommend that you wash your hands the very second you’ve finished applying the product. I’ve never know a fake tan to stain so quickly, (you won’t know how bad it is until the next day). Wearing gloves is the only way you can guarantee you won’t wake up with stained fingers.
Don’t believe reviews that say it’s odourless, because it’s not. It most certainly does have that tell-tale fake tan ‘stale biscuit’ scent. I could smell it at night, I woke up in a frenzy and rushed to the bathroom to see just how orange I was. But actually, it was fine, the scent more or less evaporates after you wash your face.
You’re telling me. Over apply this tan and you won’t be able to remove it easily at all. I’m not kidding, you’re stuck with it for a couple of days at least.
NOT FOR LEGS:
Oh, and don’t think you can use the wipe on your legs instead, mine went a deep, dark orange colour. It took me right back to what I personally consider the first ever fake tan product – Duo Tan. If you’re over 40, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. We could certainly show today’s reality tv stars a thing or two about day-glo orange legs.
I can easily see why this is a cult product in the US. If you’re OK with cutting down the wipe, sealing the remainder in the foil sachet, wrapping it in cling film to keep the sheet moist and working fast when applying it, then yes, I would absolutely recommend them.
When the application is just right, the colour is very natural (streak free too) and yes, you absolutely can go without foundation. It’s economical too, with 3 uses from each sachet.
On the other hand, apply too much and you’re stuck with a deep orange colour that won’t budge for at least a day and a half.

Here’s another ‘cult’ product (from the US) that I’ve always wanted to try – Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta Glow Pads For the Face.
Alpha Beta Glow Pads Anti-ageing Self Tanner is an anti-ageing self tanner that comes in the form of a pre-soaked towelette that contains Active Vitamin D, Microencapsulated DHA and Soy Proteins that help to deliver colour deep into your skin and prevent fading through surface exfoliation.
In other words, a self tanner that gently exfoliates.
- Synthetic Dyes
Apply Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta® Glow Pad for Face to face, neck and décolleté in circular motions, blending evenly AM or PM. *
To customise colour, increase the number of repetitions to achieve a deeper glow. Wash hands immediately after use.
*It looks like most people seem to apply this in the evenings before bed and don’t reapply for at least a couple of days, as one thing all reviewers seem to agree on, is that the colour does actually last. Great if you do achieve a sun-kissed glow, not so good if you overdo it!
This absolutely fantastic. No smell. Fast drying–no more marks on my bed sheets after waiting an hour before bed for my self-tanner to dry. And the colour was great, too.
The secret to the application is to apply very little. This is also great for travelling, not only because it makes touching up your fake tan a breeze, but it reduces the weight in your suitcase. Love, love, love this product.
These pads have more than enough self-tanner for your face and neck, and work in about 4 hours to give you quite the glow. I keep re-ordering them. Nothing else compares.
I was a bit nervous using these for the first time, but when I used them before bed and woke up the next morning with a tan, I was so happy with the result! Not sure I necessarily noticed the exfoliating properties, but I would definitely buy again!
Easy to apply and no odour, but I was totally orange the next morning. I also noticed brown spots that were not there prior to the application. Oh and the orange lasted several days. I use the alpha beta pads regularly and love them, but this was an epic failure for me. Disappointed.
I have VERY pale skin.. almost see through! I need these pads to keep me from looking sick in the winter! I love them, the smell is tolerable (only smells upon application-once you wash it off, you’re good).
Had a sample sitting in drawer forever, and when I finally talked myself into using it, I bought more. Great as long as you don’t push too hard, then it turns the skin orange. I didn’t wear any makeup 2 days following this product because it gave me such a glow.
A COUPLE OF POINTS:
1. This product is not for you if you’re allergic to soy as it contains Soy Protein.
2. One thing I have learned from reading a lot of reviews is not to use a whole towellette in one application. Reviewers have said again and again that too much product and too much pressure when applying it, will lead to an Oompa Loompa glow.
I’ve read that some people cut the towel in half before first use and keep the other airtight in a sealable plastic bag, or in my case, clingfilm. I’m certainly going to do this.
WHERE TO BUY:
Price for 20 pads in a box: Feel Unique £24.15 (although currently sold out)
I bought mine for £5 less from Gorgeous Shop for £19.32
Free P&P if you’re willing to wait 6 days for delivery – and mine did take the maximum 6 days to arrive.
I’m going to try one out this weekend. If you see an orange radio-active type glow in the sky over North London on Sunday, then you’ll know I’ve applied too much!
