REVIEW: Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Lip Pencil ‘Pillowtalk’

Charlotte Tilbury Pillowtalk lipliner

I’ve done it again and gone and bought another Charlotte Tilbury product after moaning about how expensive the range is. My problem was that the first product I bought, Colour Chameleon Eyeshadow Pencil in Champagne Diamonds, is definitely priced a little too highly for what it is.

Plus I have love/hate relationship with it, sometimes it makes my blue/grey/green eyes ‘pop’ and I’m delighted with myself. Other times though, the glittery sparkle looks too ‘disco eyes’ and it’s impossible to take off without proper cleanser. I should know, I was rubbing away with a wet cotton ear bud and a dot of glitter just wouldn’t budge.

I bought Lip Cheat Lip Pencil in the shade ‘Pillowtalk’. I use two lip pencils: The iconic Mac Spice to ‘correct’ my lip line and Body Shop Lip Pencil in ‘Beech’ over the top. I couldn’t get Spice online or in the shops, so was looking for a neutral shade of lip liner.

Pillowtalk certainly isn’t a dupe for Spice, but it for me, it does a similar job of reshaping my lip line and filling in the blurry bits. As we get older, our lip line loses definition and I wholly agree with the claims for Lip Cheat on Charlotte Tilbury’s website:

LIP CHEAT is a rich, velvety lip liner that glides effortlessly over the lips and has the power to completely re-shape, re-size and balance your lips.

  • Smoothes over texture for a seamless line
  • No feathering or transfer
  • Lasts up to 6 hours so your lips keep their shape and don’t smudge
  • Waterproof
  • Paraben-free

The important part first, colourwise, the swatch image on the website bears no resemblance whatsoever to the real thing. In fact, the shade looks Spice’s long-lost twin sister!

My swatch on the right (very slightly colour adjusted to match the real thing) is spot on. You can see it’s still a nude shade, but it’s far more pink than brown, as the website would suggest.

It’s actually a better neutral skin tone match than Spice to be honest. I can see why people would wear it on its own or with a slick of gloss. For me, it really did even up my lips and if I wanted to trace ever so slightly over my lip edge, this pencil came into its own and made the transition look seamless.

Long lasting? Yep, it ticked that box, plus it’s well pigmented. However, it’s also fairly soft (the ‘velvet’ claim?) and blunts quickly. I have to sharpen it every three uses, which is a lot.

Overall though, this was a great buy and oh dear Mac, you should’ve kept a sharper eye on your stock levels because I’m never buying Spice again after using Lip Cheat.

There’s no doubt that Charlotte Tilbury cosmetics and the customer service (even the humblest lip pencil is given rock star packaging treatment) are top quality, but the misleading website shades are putting me off a little. I think I’ll check out bloggers’ swatches online first and then go into Selfridges and try the shades for myself before purchasing anything else.

The colour is just unbelievably perfect for a natural lip. As I age I need to fill in the loss of colour to my lip line, and this is great. It’s soft and lovely on the lips and stays put.

never usually bother with a lip liner but after viewing Charlotte’s tutorials on You Tube, I decided to give Pillow Talk a try. I love it! So natural and works beautifully with both Nude Kate and my absolute fave Penelope Pink! Highly recommend!

I’ve found it difficult to find a nude lipliner that works for me but Pillow Talk is perfect. I often just use it all over my lip and a touch of clear gloss and it’s beautiful.

Sadly the completely different swatches seems to apply to most companies. I don’t understand how in this day and age they can’t make them true to life.
