AYURVEDA PURA Nourishing Hair Oil

Ayurveda is the ancient Indian holistic medical system, based on achieving physical and mental harmony with nature, which has been practised for more than 5000 years.

Ayurveda means “science of life” (“Ayu” meaning life and “Veda” meaning science), and was first recorded in the Vedas the world’s oldest surviving literature.

Ayurveda Pura’s 100% Natural Nourishing Hair Oil with Brahmi & Amla is highly therapeutic and made from the finest quality hand-selected Brahmi herb, Amla fruit and cold pressed sesame oil. Suitable for all hair types and colours.

Brahmi is a rejuvenating herb with many health giving properties. Amla (Indian Gooseberry) is renowned for its strengthening, nourishing, anti-aging and detoxing properties. The combination of Brahmi and Amla is recognised in Ayurveda for being particularly useful in nourishing, strengthening and conditioning the hair and scalp.

Based on the principles of Ayurveda, Holistic Essentials is Ayurveda Pura’s flagship range of 100% natural, premier Spa quality beauty products. Drawing on our years of spa and skin care expertise, they are organic, SLS-free, perfume-free, paraben-free and free of animal testing.

Gently massage the scalp with fingers in a circular motion. Leave on hair for 30 minutes or (ideally) overnight and wash as normal.

The scent is quite earthy, with only the merest hint of mandarin. It’s not a particularly thick, viscous-y oil, and after massaging it onto my scalp there wasn’t any greasy residue left on my hands.

It’s very pleasant to massage in, but having someone else do this for you is divine and highly recommended! I’m toying with the idea of taking it to my hair salon and asking them to use it when doing their lovely, relaxing hair conditioning massage at the sink – which, let’s face it, is the best part of going to the hairdresser.

If you have particularly thick, dry hair, I can imagine you could leave this oil on all day as it’s very light and won’t weigh hair down. For fine hair though, it’s definitely best to use it as an overnight treatment.

The oil was easy to wash out the next morning, some oils are so thick it takes a lot of shampooing, but this one was very well-behaved. There is an immediate softness to the hair after rinsing though, so no need for conditioner.

My hair was very straight and silky afterwards, but it wouldn’t hold a curl or gentle wave at all. This oil would be best if you want to wear your hair  in a long, straight style.

As I’m having my annual, ‘full head of highlights’ in 10 days, I’m going to use the oil this week as a deep conditioning, home ‘steam’ treatment to get my hair in peak condition.

Ayurveda sees everything in the universe, including human beings, as composed of five basic elements – or Panchamahabhutas:

  • Space
  • Air
  • Fire
  • Water
  • Earth

These five elements in turn combine with each other to give rise to three bio-physical forces (or Doshas) within the human body. Vata (air and space), Pitta (fire and water) and Kapha (water and earth).
