Alterna Instant Recovery Shampoo and Conditioner

My love affair with Redken All Soft Shampoo and Conditioner isn’t over, but let’s just say, we’re on a break. My hair suddenly wasn’t responding, and it wasn’t soft at all after using the duo.

The reason for this is because about 3 weeks ago, I was in an environment where the central heating was on at full blast, I could almost feel the moisture leaving my hair.

This carried on for a couple of weeks and my formally swishy, silky hair, crisped up and became limp, fluffy and bone dry. I drenched it in every deep conditioning hair mask I could, but nothing worked, so I realised that I needed a good protein treatment or shampoo to help strengthen and repair my hair.

I’m a huge fan of Joico K-Pak Deep-Penetrating Reconstructor for Damaged Hair, I really do recommend it, but I’d left my tube in the back of the airing cupboard and it came out all lumpy, so I had to chuck it. Instead, I bought:

The instant recovery shampoo is made with strand-supporting proteins. The formula attacks knots and tangles, while building up your hair’s texture. Breakages and gaps are repaired, restoring your hair’s manageability and softness.

The conditioner contains a range of proteins that are designed to help build your strands, tackling any breakages, filling gaps and closing tears. The conditioner smooths frizzy or unruly hair, leaving it looking softer and healthier.

Damaged hair, either from central heating, over processing or heated styling appliances, needs a balance of protein and moisturiser to help restore strength and condition. With the Joico K-Pak treatment, I needed to use a moisturising conditioner afterward, the Alterna duo provides both.

The shampoo smells a bit different, citrusy/herby and a bit shampooey, not unpleasant though and the scent doesn’t linger.

It’s sulphate free, so I’m not sure what foaming agent is in there, because it really lathers up. You only need a 10p sized blob, which makes me feel slightly better about the hefty price tag. I’m using the shampoo and conditioner every week for a month, then once a month/6 weeks.

Instant repair? Well, yes, I think so. Nothing was working for me – and I have a lot of hair products. I’m not out of the woods yet, but my hair immediately lost that coarse feeling. The ends feel smoother and there’s a little bit of shine fighting its way through.

Similar to my experience with K-Pak, after lathering up, my hair drank it all in and became incredibly knotty, so I was grateful that the conditioner detangled it and I was able to smoothly comb through afterwards.  On my second use a week later, my hair didn’t tangle at all. A sign to me, that my hair really needed this protein boost.

These two products were an expensive buy – I’ll continue to look, but it seems that protein rich shampoos are in general, at least a tenner a pop! I’m not (yet) seeing a budget version.

I do think they were worth it though and they might be the answer you’re looking for if you feel your hair is desperately dry, prone to breakage from moisture loss or over processed, which applies as much young women as it does to older women.  Once you hit fifty, your hair might have been through 30 years of dyeing, bleaching and styling, that takes its toll!

I need to make time and do this again. I know from experience that this treatment really does work. Click on the image for detailed instructions.

HOME STEAM TREATMENT FOR HAIRThere are lots of positive reviews for this Alterna Caviar RepairX duo, but for balance, here’s one that’s not so glowing.

It’s done nothing for my hair except increase the rate at which it falls out. When washing my hair after using this I end up with huge clumps falling out – to the point where I feel like crying and am amazed I have any hair left on my head!

It doesn’t end when hair is dried and combed through as an equal amount (if not more) falls out then as well. Hmm…OK

There had to be a downside, and here it’s the way the product is dispensed. From the first use, it’s been an absolute nightmare!

I have to pound the hard plastic bottles against the shower wall to get any product out. I’ve tried twisting the stupidly designed top off to decent it into another bottle, but no, it won’t budge. WORST PACKAGING EVER!

Great review, but (and please correct me if this is a silly question) why did you put your k-pak in the airing cupboard?

Also, you should try Redken Extreme shampoo and conditioner. Smells like blueberry muffins and was the only thing that would restore my hair to silky when i trashed it with peroxide a few years back.

Hiya, Not a silly question at all. We had a new boiler installed and the K-Pak was wrapped in a towelling turban which fell behind old boiler.

      Thanks for the tip!
