REVIEW: Perricone MD Hyalo Plasma UPDATED

ON TRIAL: Perricone MD Hyalo PlasmaThis is a new treatment product developed by Dr. Nicholas Perricone – Perricone MD of course. Hyalo Plasma ticked a few boxes for me right from the start. It’s a treatment you apply under moisturiser in the morning and after cleansing at night, before your night-time products. I like the idea that it’s working quietly in the background, but yet you can still continue with your regular skin care regimen.

Another huge bonus is that there is no scent. If you’ve used Perricone MD products before, then you’ll exactly what I’m talking about here with the marine based products. But, listen up, there is no ‘fishy’ whiff – hurrah!

The texture, described as a hybrid between a serum and a cream is exactly that. It does however, spread and cover the skin generously the way a balm does, which is a good thing as it comes in a 30ml jar.

A tiny dot on each cheek will cover up to the eye area and down to the chin. Another dot for the forehead, working down to that important space between the eyes and one for around the mouth and chin and the area immediately underneath. I have tested it on my neck and there’s no adverse reaction after a week. I’ll be interested to see how long this jar lasts with my 8 ‘dots’ a day applications.

Hyalo Plasma is also oil-free, therefore no shine under make up, which is perfect for me as I tend to shine like a beacon. ‘Hyalo’ is derived from a medical prefix meaning “resembling glass” and I can see how that translates, there is a glassy sheen on skin immediately after application, yet it’s not greasy or tacky. I do though, leave 5 minutes before applying moisturiser to allow it to absorb and not ‘travel’ when I’m applying moisturiser (with a ‘dabbing’ motion) and foundation on top.

It behaves nicely under make up, no balling or pore clogging. I’ve only been using Hyalo Plasma for a week, so it’s very early days, but I already like the smooth feel of the area underneath my eyes and on my upper cheeks.

Hyaluronic Acid is naturally occurring in almost every cell in the body, but its greatest concentration is in skin tissue. It is found in both the deep underlying dermal areas as well as the visible epidermal layers. Abundant in youthful skin, it is responsible for maintaining smoothness, suppleness and providing continuous hydration to the skin by binding 1000 times its weight in water.

With age, the ability of skin to produce Hyaluronic Acid dramatically decreases and by the time we reach the age of 50, we lose up to 50% of this essential compound. This results in noticeable ageing effects such as loss of plumpness, more pronounced wrinkles appearance and imperfections and a more sallow appearance.

Dr. Perricone recommends smoothing over entire face morning and evening on properly cleansed skin.

Hyalo Plasma harnesses three forms of Hyaluronic:

  • BARRIER HYALURONIC ACID – Imparts a visibly smooth, translucent glass-like surface
  • CROSSLINKED HYALURONIC ACID – Creates a hydrating reservoir to reduce the appearance of wrinkles
  • MICRO HYALURONIC ACID – Infuses skin with the appearance of youthful convexity, plumpness and suppleness

Combined with Dr. Perricone’s patented Plasma Delivery System, Hyalo Plasma nourishes the collagen responsible for firmness, imparting the appearance of fuller, more supple skin while restoring youthful convexity.
Hyalo Plasma also creates a customised action that intelligently identifies, adapts and addresses skin’s individual hydration needs no matter what skin type.

Science is our friend!

I’ve purposely not looked at any other reviews, I will wait until the jar’s empty and post my findings. Then, I’ll compare them to what others have said.

I’m enjoying the ease of using Hyalo Plasma, it just slots into my routine. I also like that there’s an immediate smoothing effect without the feeling of anything heavy on my skin, it’s just a sheer layer. Watch this space!

UPDATE: 16th February 2015

Easily my favourite Perricone MD product to date, although if I’m going to be honest, I’ve not always got on with some of Perricone MD’s products. The much-loved and raved about, Foundation, No Foundation, just didn’t do it for me, but Hyalo Plasma is simply wonderful and I would thoroughly recommend it.

I really do love a treatment I can wear under my make up without it interfering with my foundation. There’s no greasiness or stickiness with Hyalo Plasma, just a faint sheen for a few seconds.

The gel cream consistency is cool to the touch and absorbs completely. It disappears, but still smooths the skin’s surface as if it’s coated with an ultra thin, silky barrier.

The much talked about ‘skin feels like glass‘ effect is actually true. Touch your skin after application, but before you apply moisturiser or make up on top, and skin feels very smooth – as if it’s been filled in, but without any obvious product on your skin.

For me, the biggest improvement was the area around my eyes (always apply product with your ring finger in light, tapping movements to the delicate eye area). The fine lines which are becoming less fine as time marches on, have softened considerably.

I also noticed improvement and a slight plumping of the lines running downwards from the corners of my mouth. I’m sure there’s a technical name for them, but if I say they’re like the vertical lines on a ventriloquist’s dummy’s mouth and jaw, then I think you’ll know exactly what I mean. They’re quite alarming, but barely noticeable unless I examine my face with a powerful magnifying mirror – which of course, I do. So I was very happy to see them filled out a bit.

The scent is best described as expensive pharmacy, slightly medicinal – clean, clinical. The 30ml jar lasted just over 4 weeks, with 8 ‘dots’ of product used morning and night.
