No spoilers, no full synopses, just suggestions.
HOLLYWOOD 7-part series Netflix
A group of aspiring actors and filmmakers in post-World War II Hollywood try to make it big – no matter the cost.
That’s not half the story, but I won’t spoil it for you, I hadn’t read about the series before I watched it and I suggest you don’t either. I enjoyed all the more because I had no expectations.
It’s a sumptuous Ryan Murphy production with a beautiful twist in the tale.
Jim Parson’s eyebrows – Ridiculous and distracting.
The actor playing Rock Hudson – He spoiled it for me a little bit. In every single scene, he looks as if he’s just wandered onto the set by accident. In the beginning, he was supposed to be playing a naive character, but he kept it going throughout the film!
It sounds insane, but I think if he had just a smudge of guyliner, it would have improved his performance and made him less bewildered-looking. That sounds odd, but if you watch the series tell me I’m not wrong!
AMERICAN HORROR STORY Murder House Season 1 – 12 parts
The Harmons and their teenage daughter Violet, move from Boston to Los Angeles to make a fresh start after Vivien has a miscarriage. Soon after the miscarriage, Ben has an affair with one of his students. They move into a restored mansion.
This was also created by Ryan Murphy and is it the best of his American Horror Stories series. I watched it many years ago.
It’s creative, twisty, and only a little bit gory – though I had to skip the chilling intro each time. I also loved Asylum (now that was scary), Coven (stylish witches), and Freak Show (killer clown).
TIGER KING 8 part series Netflix
Documentary on colourful and controversial American zoo owner Joe Exotic, currently in prison after being convicted of a failed murder plot against his nemesis, animal rights activist Carole Baskin.
I’m so over all the hype surrounding Tiger King, but only because it was the first thing I binge-watched over 6 weeks ago. I couldn’t sleep during the first two weeks of lockdown, so I stayed up to 2am feasting on TK.
The story has to be seen to be believed, but even then, you’re going to go WTF? I won’t spoil it for you, but it is worth your time. I skipped through the middle episodes (all the ‘good’ stuff is shown in the beginning or at the end of each programme) and I’m saving the new ‘update’ episode for a rainy day.
Joe Exotic IS a figure of fun, but there’s an underlying streak of unreasonable hatered in him that’s not so funny. He’s not a sympathetic character (none of them are except…well, wait and see). I can’t understand why he’s been built up as this loveable rogue by celebrities. The series is very watchable though. Just don’t be sucked in like me and marvel at his incredible singing voice and wonder why he didn’t become a country singer instead of a zookeeper.
I think Rob Lowe is doing the movie! Jimmy Fallon’s impression is also fabulous.
THE MINDY PROJECT Series 1 & 2 in particular. SKY
The series follows obstetrician/gynecologist Mindy (Mindy Karling) as she tries to balance her personal and professional life surrounded by quirky co-workers in a small medical practice in New York City.
The one-liners come thick and fast. Girly and laugh out loud.
I didn’t watch it after series 2 but it’s repeated on Sky in the morning, so I’m catching odd episodes, still great fun.
Also, if you watch it, Cliff is my favourite of all of Mindy’s boyfriends – and she goes through a quite a few.
BLOOD Series 1 and 2 Channel 5 and Virgin Media
Cat arrives at her childhood home, where her brother and sister greet her following news of her mother’s recent death.
Believe the hype, this was so beautifully written and wrong-footed me all the way.
NOTE: I wanted to slap a certain character after series 1.
I missed this dark drama the first time around so I binged watched it in 3 days so I could enjoy series 2 immediately afterward.
Series 2 was a new story but seamlessly entwined with the first series.
NOTE: I wanted to slap a different character after series 2.
Uncut Gems (SKY)
I don’t rate Adam Sandler films at all apart from The Wedding Singer (80s nostalgia) and 50 First Dates. This is different, he’s deeply unpleasant as usual, but it’s a simple story told well.
SPY The most gloriously silly film with Melissa McCarthy
I notice the strangest things, but I think Miranda Hart is wearing a wig styled exactly like her own hair.
The scene in the restaurant with Melissa and Jude Law and the cupcake pendant is glorious.
Unforgotten – ITV series. S1 and 2.
Just Friends – Ryan Reynolds being funny and sexy (sometimes) and adorable.
YOU – Both seasons, but S1 in particular.
The Sinner S1 & 2
Good Girls – S 1 & 2 I gobbled them up
I loved this so much, it’s very girly so I had to watch it on my own (same with The Mindy Project). I was so disappointed when I thought it was cancelled, but series 3 is on its way!
Flight (Denzel Washington)
Sneaky Pete – Seasons 1 and 2 (3 wasn’t great).
Broad City TV series.
The Office US – Season 1, 2, and 3. I think you have to PAY for the other seasons, so skip them!
