Lancôme Hypnôse Doll Eyes Mascara

Lancôme Hypnôse Doll Eyes Mascara

I think I may have finally found THE ONE! I’ve been using Lancôme’s Doll Eyes mascara nearly every day for a month now, which I think is long enough to write a fully rounded review.

I usually fall in love with a mascara immediately and then find two weeks later that it clumps or smudges, so far though, this one hasn’t let me down.

The cone-shaped brush is carefully developed to assure the ideal load on each lash, even in the inner corner of the eye (Agree 100%)

The exclusive Fibershine formula, enriched with nylon powders, offers perfect load (Yes) and beautiful curve (Curve, not so much) for seductive fanned out lashes (Yes again)

Place the brush on the centre of the lash fringe. Let the brush glide over the lashes from root to tip in a zigzag movement

Use the tip of the brush to catch the small lashes in the inner corner of the eyes

Intensify the outer corner of the eyes using the largest part of the brush to open the eyes

Apply on lower lashes

I feel brown mascara looks less harsh on my pale skin tone than black. Doll Eyes comes in three shades:

  • 01 So Black!
  • 011 Noir Intense – Very, very (almost blue) black
  • 02 So Brown!

The brown is a proper deep brown shade. Although, hold the tube towards the light and it has a deep purple/brown sheen. It’s a very flattering shade, unlike Benefit’s They’re Real! Mascara in Beyond Brown which is too red and makes my eyes look sore.

This is not a new mascara and I’m sure the cone shape isn’t unique, but this brush head is just the right size and the wand feels comfortable in the hand. The pointed tip will coat those tricky inner lashes without fear of poking yourself in the eye – something that happens to me a lot!

I’m not convinced the wand curls lashes sufficiently, I still need to use my Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler (worth the money, because it’ll grip even the shortest eyelashes without pinching your skin) to give my lashes a strong curl.

I’ve read some reviews that have said the formula is either too wet or too dry. I would say it’s not a wet mascara, although you do have to ‘dab’ the tip to get rid of excess product, but I’ve found that’s the same with every mascara I’ve ever used. The collar at the top of the tube does a good job of removing excess product from the brush as you pull it out.

You should however, allow a few minutes for it to dry. I found that it lengthens my top lashes so much that when I blink, it sometimes transfers the product to under my eye.

I also found that because my lashes weren’t stiff after the first coat, I was able to apply a second coat without any clumping, which is rare for me.

My eyes are sensitive, but I’ve had no adverse reactions to this mascara. I should point out though, that it’s highly fragranced with a definite flowery perfume/very slightly chemical scent.

The ‘doll eyes’ effect doesn’t translate to over the top ‘spidery’ lashes. Instead, lashes are separated and defined in a natural doll-like way. A lot of people apply false eyelashes just to the outer corners of the eyes, with Doll Eyes, you’re able to fan out lashes just using the wand to give a subtle ‘false eyelash’ effect at the corners to widen eyes.

I found the ‘zig-zag motion didn’t work as well as just simply applying it straight from root to tip.

The mascara isn’t waterproof, but it lasts a good 7-8 hours without smudging. That said, for the first time ever, I applied mascara to my bottom lashes – the brush really does catch all the tiny hairs. It lasted about 4-5 hours before I had to wipe away some slight smudging with a damp cotton wool bud. It’s absolutely worth this little inconvenience though, because mascara applied top and bottom dramatically opens up the eyes.

As I’m going into week 5 with Doll Eyes, I’ll be interested to see if it starts to dry out or clump. For now though, this really is the one and I’m happy to spend money on a quality mascara that actually delivers.
