Cold sores are unsightly and they can really hurt! Unfortunately, once you’ve become infected with the cold sore virus, you’re stuck with it for life.
The virus lies dormant until a trigger reactivates it. Triggers vary – stress, illness (especially a weakened immune system) and extreme temperature changes are common culprits. Hormonal changes caused by menstruation and menopause can also wake up the virus.
My cold sore breakouts (provoked by sudden sunshine or cold wind) are thankfully rare, which is lucky really, because not only does my lip on the affected side swell up, the lower part of my face and my neck does as well.
I admit that I can’t stand how it looks, so I apply a dab of concealer (Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Flawless Wear Concealer can’t be beaten), and lipstick to cover it up. I swipe the lipstick with an ear bud and then use my finger to apply it to my lips to prevent contamination.
My saving grace is that I will never pick at a cold sore. Not even when the scab is on its last legs and is practically begging to be peeled off. Always keep fingers (and everything else) well away from a cold sore.
The Skin Shop, an online retailer with an enormous variety of skin care products, sell two liquorice based, lip care products: Liquorice & Melissa Lip Gel and Liquorice Balm.
Liquorice (from the root of the Glycyrrhiza glabra plant), has long known antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties and is ideal to help prevent or speed up cold sores.
LIQUORICE & MELISSA LIP GEL
A natural cold sore rescue lip gel containing an extract of liquorice and melissa oil could help reduce the intensity of cold sore outbreaks.
HOW TO USE
Apply the lip gel at the first tingling from an impending cold sore. The rescue lip gel can be applied before symptoms arise in situations that increase the risk of getting a cold sore. It’s fine to use on lips with established cold sores and will not aggravate the condition further.
I find it does smell quite strongly of liquorice in the tube, but once applied, the scent disappears.
I’ve always suffered from cold sores since I was young and each time i got one not only did it hurt it looked awful too! I tried everything to make it go quicker but nothing worked, then I found this gel, it’s brilliant. As soon as you feel the tingle put it on and it stops the cold sore in its tracks.
Brilliant for cold sores, shortens the time to go, but it’s also less sore. Also good for dry patches on skin, a must for winter.
I spotted the dreaded sign of a cold sore first thing in the morning and applied the Lip Gel several times during the day. I followed this with the Liquorice Balm as I went to bed. Got up this morning and not only did I not have a cold sore, there was no evidence that one had erupted the day before.
Super smooth hypoallergenic lip balm containing an active extract of liquorice.
HOW TO USE
Rub onto the lips daily or as often as required. Use it every day for maximum conditioning effect and to keep lips in healthy condition.
I’m premenopausal and getting a lot more cold sores than usual. I have read that these are a symptom. I love the smell and the fact that the balm isn’t thick and greasy. I’m using it twice a day and always use some at bedtime. My lips tingle slightly after use.
I have been using this product since 2009 when my mum read about it in a magazine. I used to get cold sores all the time, approximately 6-8 times per year! Sometimes as soon as one would heal up, another one appreared. I use this balm every night before bed and I can honestly say I wouldn’t be without it. In 6 years I have had about 5 cold sores which is amazing!
This is a generous 30ml pot of balm. I get a stronger whiff of liquorice with this than with the gel and my lips do tingle a little after application.
As with the lip gel, you can apply this over an existing cold sore.
I’ve given the balm to Mark and I use the gel. He gets a fair few cold sores and usually smothers them with Blistex when they first appear – not pretty, because it’s a thick, off white cream.
He is however, using this balm every day, it’s non greasy and more importantly, it’s not overly shiny or obvious on his lips.
I can’t really add much more to this review, because 10 weeks on, neither of us have had an outbreak…
