REVIEW: Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick

Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Cream Shadow StickThis is easily the best ‘gift with purchase’ freebie I’ve ever used. I’m hit and miss with Bobbi Brown products, but when they’re good, they are very good indeed.

I received a mini Long-Wear Shadow Cream Shadow Stick in shade Taupe, with my first purchase a few months ago. Also included was a mini eye cream (as yet unused) and a dinky lip gloss in shade Rose Sugar – divine.

WHAT IS IT?

A long-lasting, do-it-all eye shadow that’s a stroke of genius—just swipe and go. This budge-proof formula stays put for 8 hours.

Glides on lids tug-free and can be used to shade, define, smoke up and highlight eyes.

HOW TO USE

  • Swipe across lids and blend with fingertips.

I disagree and say blend it out with a brush, but work fast, it sets in seconds.

REVIEW

The cynic in me used to think freebies were duds the cosmetic companies couldn’t shift, but I see now that (sometimes) they hand out their best-selling products so you’re tempted to buy the full size version.

SHADE

Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick

Described as a medium caramel, it’s really more like burnt caramel. The intense pigment lightens a little as you blend, although it’s nothing like the official online swatch – are they ever?

I use mine in the crease line and I think that’s how most people use Taupe. My tiny sample, which actually is very generous at 0.9g, has barely worn down. Use the lightest touch possible because it really does stay put.

I use a Mac 219 pencil brush to apply, and blend out with a Mac 221, although I’ve been trialling Luxe Studio brushes (high quality dupes for Artis brushes) and the thin one, 5X, buffs out the colour better than the 221 which, annoyingly, is starting to splay. This is disappointing because I can’t control when the colour goes and Taupe is impossible to shift once in place. I’ve gone out more than once with very dark eyes. Less, smoke, more fog.

That’s the beauty of this shadow stick though, no creasing or travelling across your eyelid. It still looks freshly applied at the end of the day.

OTHER SHADES

The matt Taupe is flattering on most skin tones, but, with the 18 shades which range from matt, to subtle, to full on shimmer, there’s plenty of choice for all skin tones.

If there’s a downside then it’s the price, £23.00 for 1.6g is steep, but then again, it will last for ages. The stick has a creamy texture, so it won’t dry out.

I’m on the site now, ‘Black Friday’ code TAKE20 gives you 20% off, but I’m hovering between Sunlight Gold and Goldstone, even at £18.40 each with the discount, it’s a lot. I’d really prefer a set of mini ones, but they’re not on the site.

VITAMIN ENRICHED FACE BASE

However, what is on the site, under the ‘Travel Essentials’ section, is a 15ml jar of Vitamin Enriched Face Base, an oil free moisturiser/primer, for £12.50 (which works out about the same price per ml as the full-size jar – although it’s £10.00 with the discount today). I’ve read a lot of good things about this, but don’t want to commit to a 50ml jar, it, so that at least is going into my basket.

YOU TUBE ‘GURU’

There are so many of them now, it’s hard to sift out the gems from the PR puffs. One make-up artist you might not have heard of, although she’s been around for a while because she was part of the Bobbi Brown wedding make up squad for Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, is Hannah Martin.

Obviously, she exclusively uses Bobbi Brown products, but she’s bouncy and enthusiastic and more importantly, versatile. She covers skin care and make up for dry and oily skin and darker skin tones. Definitely one to watch.
