REVIEW: Bobbi Brown Eye Gloss – Beach Nude

Bobbi Brown Eye Gloss

So, I jumped on the ‘glossy eye’ bandwagon and bought Bobbi Brown’s Eye Gloss in Beach Nude, a shiny caramel shade.

BOBBI BROWN EYE GLOSS

An all-new liquid shadow formula that glides on lids and delivers a glossy, high-shine finish.

The liquid formula delivers a high-shine visual effect and never leaves lids sticky or tacky. ← Lie!

HOW TO USE

  • Twist base of flow-through wand to dispense product, then swipe across lids.
  • Use fingers to blend onto lids.

REVIEW

I already use Missha M Dewy Glossy Eyes (which I love), and though the concept of a ‘modern glossy eye’ is similar, that’s all these two products have in common.

Also, I can’t believe I moaned about splashing out £9.00 on M Dewy 4g, when Bobbi Brown 1.4ml, (how much?) is £10.00 more. Is it our consumer mindset? Do we subconsciously give ourselves permission to spend more on a premium brand?

As a positive, the colour is divine and Beach Nude is understandably, the most popular shade.

APPLICATION PROBLEMS

I mistakenly applied a slick over another eyeshadow (I was treating it as M Dewy – wrong!) It reacted and separated, it wouldn’t wipe off, so I had clean up and start over.

Mistake number two, I applied it over primer, now I do use NYX Milk Jumbo Pencil as a primer, so I could be at fault, maybe a lighter formula of a dedicated primer would work? Anyway, it went very patchy and I went back to the beginning.

I think the gloss is best applied to a naked i.e. non primed eye, although longevity would be a problem. It’s just that the opaqueness means skin colour shows through; for this reason it’s better suited to those with deeply tanned, olive and darker skin tones. For me and my fair skin, not so much.

So, I applied it to a bare lid. Unfortunately, it’s tacky and sticky and that stickiness doesn’t die down during the day, plus it creased. It feels like a lip gloss and is just as tacky.

There was a ‘side effect’ though, that I didn’t mind – my eyelashes separated and fanned out beautifully into long spikes (obviously some of the gloss transferred to them). It was much the same effect as putting Vaseline on them.

Talking of Vaseline, back in the 70s and 80s, we used to mix a tiny blob of it with eyeshadow TO CREATE A GLOSSY EYE!

We also used to apply lip gloss to our lids, which sometimes worked, but more often than not, left us with very sore eyelids – not recommended!

I feel Bobbi Brown Eye Gloss was an expensive mistake.

OTHER REVIEWS

Beauty bloggers are raving about this product and I spotted Caroline Hirons (olive skin tone?) wearing it on a video, it looked amazing and made her eyes look twinkly.

However, delve a little deeper and other reviewers – i.e. consumers, have experienced the same problems to me.

It’s so sticky and gross feeling, kind of like a super thick clear gloss. I feel like I stayed tacky all day long and kept sticking my lid together.

Once applied it feels very tacky and the shade is nice but not worth the money. Great substitute for that wet beachy eye look would be Vaseline.

The product was sticky and just uncomfortable. I was hoping for a clean, polished look, but this product fell short.

Very opaque and not very long-lasting. It’s not worth the price. I used this over a week time frame to test it out and hated how much it creased.

This product is so tacky, for such a high-end product this was not expected. It gets all over my lid and creates a mess all around.

For balance, there are lots of people who love it, but so many are saying it remains tacky and creases and that’s exactly how I feel.

The concept of a glossy eye is so strange to me but sometimes it can look so pretty… gutted this didnt work out all that great but maybe could of been one from a bad batch!

There are some great glossy eye looks on Pinterest, but I really think it’s in the application – I just haven’t got it right yet!

I’ll keep trying though, £19.50 for such little product is spurring me on!

OMG! It looks awful and i could never imagine having sticky eyes either.
The same is said about their shadow sticks too. They never set down and cause eyelids to be sticky.
I love some BB products but not these. I sometimes think BB wants to be in the Dior/Chanel category of high end beauty. (they certainly charges the prices), however ends up feeling a touch like middle of the roads in terms of quality. Shame really.
I seem to recall Chanel did a palette with eye glosses in that never really sold and has long been forgotten about. Gloss is for the lips only. I’m not even a fan of liquid blushers either. Yuck! Thanks for keeping us all posted with your review.

I know Mandy, I fell for the hype! I really liked the way it ‘spiked’ my eyelashes, but I guess a dot of Vaseline would create the same effect for 1000th of the price.

Liquid blushers are the devil’s work! You could never blend them out fast enough.

I also bought BB foundation stick which I’ve always wanted to try. I’ve only had it a week, but it’s doing OK so far.

I must admit, the foundation stick looks great and ideal for travel. I think BB do great highlighters and their cream eyeshadows in the pots are fab. Beach Bronze is a ‘holy Grail’ for me. It gives a beautiful finish and works with almost every Eyeshadow I own and believe me, that’s a lot xx

I bought the foundation stick in shade warm sand 2.5 ‘Golden light beige with yellow undertones; for fair to light skin with redness’ which sounds ideal but is a bit TOO yellow on me. I ordered another one which I thought was lighter, but I’ve just seen that it’s the same shade! That’s going back!

I’ve also ordered Beach Bronze because you’re an enabler and I feel you forced me to do it through the power of the internet (or, it could be that I trust your judgement and we have similar colouring).

I must tell you that when I did my first order with BB, I got 15% off and 3 samples, 2.5ml eye cream, a black mascara I’ll pass on and a mini (nearly an inch long) of Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick in Taupe, it’s really good as a contour for the crease line. Strong pigment, doesn’t slide and the colour holds all day. I’m definitely going to purchase of full size one when this one is finished.

That’s good to know. Hope you like the beach bronze. It is a lovely brown. I just bought the new Guerlain Lingerie de Peau Aqua Nude foundation. Loving it so far.
