REVIEW: e.l.f. Studio Lip Primer & Plumper

e.l.f. Studio Lip Primer & Plumper

I absolutely love this lip primer and plumper by e.l.f. However, it only scores an average of 3.4 (out of 5) from a whopping 425 reviews on the official website, I think I can see why.

Most of the complaints revolve around the ‘primer’ part of the wand. …Dries out lips, changes the colour of your lipstick, a funny odour, it feels chalky, etc.

I assume the reviewers are applying it (correctly and as directed), all over their lips and maybe it does do all those things (though I’ve not noticed a dodgy smell).

I just apply it over my natural lip line and then gently dab it to blend it slightly. It doesn’t do a bad job of preventing lipstick bleed, and holds for about 3-3.5 hours before it needs to be reapplied – sooner, if you have a drink. Those of you over 50 will remember Lipcote, marketed as a lipstick sealer, but in reality, best described as superglue for the lips, lipstick wouldn’t dare budge.

ELF STUDIO LIP PRIMER & PLUMPER

Achieve longer lasting lip colour and sexy plumped lips. The Primer creates a base for lip colour for no budge, no smudge pigment that lasts all day.

The cinnamon scented Plumper enhances your lips with a subtle plumping tingle effect for fuller, larger looking lips. Primer first then plumper.

HOW TO USE

  • Use the primer to prime bare lips.
  • Use the plumper alone, over the primer or over lipstick to give you full, plump lips.

The star of the show is the plumper. Anyone who says they don’t experience a mouth numbing OMG! My lips are on fire! burning sensation after using the plumper for the first time, are either fibbing, or they’ve got teflon lips, this stuff is hardcore!

The cinnamon scent is very strong, which I actually find very comforting, because it reminds me of Christmas (LOOK OUT FOR THE M&S BEAUTY ADVENT CALENDAR IN NOVEMBER!) and warm coffee shops.

This spice (I think this is also true of ground cloves) acts as a natural irritant and stimulates blood flow to the lips, hence the plumping effect. You could probably dissolve cinnamon in vaseline and make your own, though don’t quote me on that.

You can actually see your lips enlarge. I wait for the tingle to die down a bit and then apply lipstick on top. It doesn’t last as long as the primer, and perhaps lipstick has to be reapplied a little more often because it’s quite slippy, but it definitely does its job.

Proceed with caution, (actually, just don’t do it), if you have any sore or cut on your lip, because you will regret it.

I haven’t made that much of a dent on the Plumper bullet – although it is starting to look a little pointy, but I will be ordering a second one, along with another tube (or two) of e.l.f. Studio Lip Exfoliator  – highly recommended and always my first step in lip prep.

Fab product, great price.
