Should you, or shouldn’t you, exfoliate every day? Put that question to top L.A. Dermatologist Dr. Harold Lancer who’s treated the likes of Kim Kardashian, Victoria Beckham, Beyoncé and Oprah, (safe to say, he’s a big hitter, skin care wise), and he will say yes, exfoliate every day to help loosen dead skin and improve the penetration and performance of your skin care products.
Exfoliation means allowing the top layer of skin to be nourished. It is just removing dull-skin debris and allowing oxygen to transfer the lower layers of skin.
I’m in two minds about this, I’m worried about stripping my skin’s natural oils if I exfoliate every day, yet I do find my skin care products really do work better after exfoliation. My compromise then, is to exfoliate every day, but only with the most gentle facial ‘scrub’ products.
One I’ve been trialling recently is Yes to Grapefruit Daily Facial Scrub for Uneven Skin Tone. It’s a particularly gentle formulation with the same zingy pink grapefruit scent – which you either love or hate, found in their other Yes to…Grapefruit skin care products. I rather like it because I need something fresh and citrusy in the mornings to wake me up as I stagger into the shower at silly o’clock.
The texture is very runny, so much so, that you should gently squeeze/pour a small amount into the palm of your hand and scoop it up with your fingers. Don’t apply directly to your fingertips, because it’ll just drip through them. There’s no evil SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate – synthetic foaming agent) which means it won’t lather up.
I rub it in gentle, massaging circles for about 10-20 seconds, never any longer. My skin’s sensitive (mild rosacea) and reddens at the slightest trauma, but this scrub has never left my skin red or irritated.
The grains are tiny and spread out. If you rub the product onto dry skin, you’d hardly feel any abrasion. Skin feels smooth afterwards, but not stripped or tight.
Don’t forget to apply moisturiser afterwards. People often forget to do this, but moisture (even in oily skin) is essential to help repair any micro damage from exfoliation.
HOW TO USE
Wet face with warm water. Take a dollop (a small one) of scrub and massage onto skin.
Yes to Grapefruit Daily Facial Scrub is a gentle daily exfoliator to help slough away dead skin cells and restore your skin’s natural radiance. Formulated with Lemon Balm to help calm and repair damaged skin and Grapefruit, which naturally evens skin tone and enhances luminosity, leaving skin soft, smooth, and naturally hydrated.
It’s a gentle exfoliator with very little lather. It has a very strong grapefruit scent, but I happen to love it. It makes me want to eat it, lol. It’s not very moisturising, but it does leave your skin clean and looking radiant.
You can use it every day because it’s so gentle. It keeps your skin clear and soft and plus, it doesn’t dry your skin out!
Just a little goes a long way. I like this because it is not too abrasive yet I feel does just the right scrub. I use it everyday. I love the smell or the thought of it anyway.
I generally use a gentle cleansing milk with a Clarisonic, so I don’t often add a scrub into my regimen as well, but this one is non abrasive and leaves your face feeling great! I have pretty dry skin, but this didn’t do anything to aggravate it.
Can I just say this stuff is amazing! I’m usually scared of scrubs because my skin is majorly sensitive but this is so gentle and smooth and I love it! The only down side may be that the scent can be a little overwhelming at first, but I like grapefruit so I don’t really mind.
I have very sensitive skin and was pleasantly surprised to be able to use this product . It is a terrific facial scrub which cleanses and exfoliates without being harsh to delicate facial tissue.
The beads are very fine and gentle and the grapefruit acidity acts like a chemical exfoliator, but not drying or irritating at all. My skin is noticeably less red and acne scars seem dulled. I currently use it almost every day, but will rotate it with the Yes To Carrots Cream Cleanser I just ordered.
This scrub is very nice – provides gentle exfoliation and brightening with a more natural formula. Texture is similar to Philosophy’s Microdelivery Exfoliating Wash – runny jelly with very fine grit to leave your face feeling polished. Plus it smells citrusy and fresh. Doesn’t dry or irritate and a little goes a long way. Effective – daily use works to keep my face smooth and flake free.
People with darker complexions need to be cautious with exfoliation because they are prone to post-inflammatory pigmentation, which is difficult to reverse. WebMD
