I don’t always trust what I see on Pinterest. A lot of glossy ‘Pins’ which at first look interesting and informative, can lead to a website packed with pop up ads which bear no relation to the pin ‘subject’ itself.

I did a find a little treasure though. A website called Recipeforfood.biz run by a woman called Angera Barbara. Yes, there are adverts running along the top and on the right hand side of the site, but they’re not intrusive i.e. there’s nothing you can’t ignore and you don’t have to scroll through pages of nonsense to get to the good stuff.

And there is indeed a lot of good stuff. Recipes for vegans and diabetics; for those trying to lose weight; lazy cooks, enthusiastic cooks and even an introduction to authentic Vietnamese food.

Here’s what caught my eye and why I pinned them to my Pinterest account.

WHY I LIKE THIS:
We all know these tips, but it’s nice to have a reminder, plus it’s a simple health benefit using ingredients we all have to hand. A regular morning cup of honey, lemon and cinnamon tea is a very good habit to get into.

Lemon and Weight Loss

Lemons contain compounds called polyphenols that go beyond calories and carbs. These substances, which include hesperidin, naringen, eriocitrin and diosmin, are reported by researchers in Japan to have high antioxidant power and the ability to suppress inflammation, prevent cancer and ward off other lifestyle-related diseases.

Honey and Weight Loss

Many dieters avoid honey because of its high sugar content, but it affects the body differently than table sugar. The April 20, 2008 issue of “Scientific World Journal” compared the effects of honey and sugar on weight loss. When 70 grams of honey was tested on obese patients, it reduced body weight, body fat, cholesterol, triglycerides and inflammation compared to 70 grams of sugar.

Though honey is a better choice than table sugar, it still has the potential to raise blood sugar levels in some individuals. Use with caution if you are being treated for diabetes.

Cinnamon and Weight Loss

According to a review of the properties of cinnamon by the United States Department of Agriculture, it reduces inflammation in the body, improves insulin’s ability to metabolise blood sugar, inhibits the growth of cancer cells and reduces blood pressure. Researchers also report that cinnamon decreases body fat and improves levels of lean body mass when consumed at a daily dose of 500 milligrams over a period of 12 weeks.

Putting Them All Together

Enjoy a relaxing cup of tea made with lemon, honey and cinnamon, as all three components can help with weight loss. You can add all three to a cup of green tea or make your own tea by adding 1 tbsp. of lemon, 1 tbsp. of honey and 1 tsp. of cinnamon to hot water. Stir well, and allow the cinnamon particles to sink to the bottom if you wish.

You can also use cinnamon sticks for clearer tea. Simply put the sticks into hot water and let them steep for five minutes. Cinnamon’s active compounds will be absorbed into the water, and heat does not destroy them. Enjoy a cup of lemon-honey-cinnamon tea twice a day to help you reach your weight loss goals.

Incorporate the tea into a healthful lifestyle that also includes a balanced diet and fitness program. While honey, lemon and cinnamon all aid in weight loss, they can’t compensate for a poor diet or sedentary lifestyle. Talk to your doctor before embarking on your weight loss journey to help you lose weight safely.

WHY I LIKE THIS:
I’ve checked out the ingredients list and there’s nothing ‘wacky’ – none of that ‘¼ teaspoon of some exotic (and expensive) vitamin powder’ that you can only buy in huge quantities, which you’ll use only use one (oh yes, I’ve been there). Just simple and straightforward.

3 INGREDIENT FLOUR LESS CHOCOLATE CAKE

WHY I LIKE THIS:
It has the words ‘chocolate’ and ‘cake’ in the title.

Another recipe, very much at the other end of the healthy spectrum, is this 3 ingredient, gluten-free, flour less chocolate cake. Unfortunately, the most only healthy thing about this cake are the raspberries dotted on top, as it calls for an outrageous amount of butter.

However, I have eaten a very similar cake in a fancy veggie restaurant and it is absolutely delicious. I can only recommend baking it for a small crowd and generously sending everyone home with a piece. It’s very rich, so only a little slither each! Serve with a generous dollop of whipped cream, obviously!
