REVIEW: TRESemme Heat Defence Styling Spray
I spend a lot of money on hair styling products, I always have. But, when you think of everything we put our hair through; tinting, highlighting, straightening, curling etc then, add in environmental factors, the natural ageing process, pre/post menopause and it makes sense to want to protect your hair and try to keep it the best condition.
I am however, looking to review more budget hair and beauty products for this site and I’ve read so many positive things about purse friendly, TRESemme Heat Defence Styling Spray, I thought I’d give it a whirl.
WHAT IS IT?
This product guards against heat styling tools up to 230 degrees celsius, keeping your hair shiny and incredibly soft. Professional quality formula contains a heat activated complex to help protect your hair during heat styling, whilst smoothing frizz and sealing in shine.
HOW TO USE
Spray liberally 6-8 inches away from mid-shaft to ends. Use a brush to pull hair straight and blow dry from roots to ends.
Use both on damp hair before you blow-dry and on dry hair before curling or using straightening irons to shield hair from damaging heat.
I really like this product, my hair is quite damaged and this leaves my hair really soft and looking great. I’ve been told these products aren’t too good for your hair because of the silicone, but that’s definitely not the case for me and I think it helps to fill in the porous areas in my hair making it look and feel good instead of a bit crunchy.
Amazing product! Usually, the only heat styling I do to my hair is blow drying so whenever I blow dry I use this and my frizzy, afro-ish hair is suddenly smooth and silky! Some people don’t like the smell of it but I do. The product is a lightweight spray and doesn’t weigh down my fine hair at all. It also doesn’t make it greasy which is great as I only like to wash my hair every two-three days.
I didn’t ever use a heat defence spray when blow-drying or straightening my hair. My friend referred me to this and I now use it every day! It smells so nice! I have typical African hair, VERY THICK. I was suprised that it actually made my hair straight on the first go. I recommend this to EVERYONE!
It made my hair feel really greasy and brittle at the ends, and although it smelled nice when I first sprayed it, after I had dried my hair and straightened it, it make my hair sink of fish! It was so overpowering I had to wash it again. Horrendous! No other product has made my hair smell like that.
I have fine hair in a bob and this product increases the static in my hair. My daughter has long, thick hair and it works well for her if we use the straighteners, so maybe just avoid with fine hair.
Been using this for over 3 years now, it does protect hair, and you only need 2-3 pumps of spray for med length hair. It does an amazing job for a very reasonable price.
The spray smells great, is lightweight on my hair so doesn’t leave a sticky/heavy residue and my hair feels really soft and shiny after using it. It really seems to work as my hair doesn’t feel as dried out as it used to after straightening it or drying. Will be buying this again.
Been using this 3 times a week for the past 18 months. Smells fruity, and gets compliments, with an excellent spray. The sprayer has a lock function for travel. Spray over damp hair, brush through, and blow dry. My hairdresser always says my thick hair is normally in very good condition and this is one of the products I use.
I apply it liberally to my hair (concentrating on the ends) before blow drying and then again on the ends only if I use my curling wand etc afterwards. I tend to use my heat tools on the highest heat possible and because I use this spray I don’t have any split or dry ends at all. Totally protected.
I’m going to start with a little quibble and maybe it’s because I’m left-handed, but I find the spray nozzle really tricky to use (with either hand). I can’t get a decent grip and have to use both hands, I think the ‘neck’ needs to be a little bit longer.
There’s a little plastic clip on the pump you press from side to side to lock and unlock the spray mechanism. I’m not sure you’d want to put this huge bottle in your holiday luggage though. Best to decant some into a spray travel bottle and wrap in cling film to protect against leakage.
The scent is innocuous enough, light and ‘artificially’ fruity, but it doesn’t linger. I find the product a touch sticky on application, I use about 3-4 pumps, but a comb through on slightly damp hair takes care of that.
The first few times I used it, it made my blow dried hair fluffy and flyaway, exactly the opposite of what I wanted. I stuck with it though and didn’t use any other styling products ie serum or leave in conditioners in case they were interfering with the product – but again, the same (non) result.
The game changer was using my straightening irons. Obviously this spray needs serious heat to works its magic. Suddenly, all those positive reviews made sense, hair instantly softens as you glide the tongs along the lengths (although, in my case, I always stop just short of the ends). Hair is smooth and feels light.
The moisturising benefits are apparently accumulative, so this will be something I’m going to look out for, as I’ll now be using this spray on a regular basis. It’s refreshing to find a budget product that actually delivers, I need to explore more products from this ‘professional quality’ brand.
Value wise this is a generous 300ml bottle for £3.50 – The RRP price £5.25, but Boots usually have it on some sort of offer at £3.50.
