REVIEW: Kérastase Masque Oléo-Relax
This is an old favourite, Kérastase Masque Oléo-Relax, a moisturising hair mask for dry and ‘rebellious’ (they mean frizzy) hair.
WHAT IS IT?
Kérastase Masque Oléo-Relax is a smoothing masque to discipline dry, frizzy, unmanageable hair. Its smoothing formula will leave hair soft and silky whilst the Anti-Frizz Protection properties prevent it turning unmanageable in humid weather.
Kérastase Masque Oléo-Relax is formulated with Nutri-Huile Complex, containing shorea and palm oils and Anti-Frizz Protection formula, a soluble silicone derivative, which work to smooth and nourish your dry, frizzy, unmanageable hair. Hair will benefit from improved softness and long-lasting volume (not so much) and control.
HOW TO USE:
- Apply 1 to 2 (1 is enough) hazlenut-sized amounts of product into the hair section by section
- Leave for 5 minutes (longer if possible, you want your hair to drink it up)
- Add a little warm water, emulsify
- Rinse thoroughly
My curly hair was looking dry and frizzy due to regular straightening. I was desperate to improve its appearance. This, combined with the shampoo made a huge immediate difference. After straightening with irons it is shiny and sleek, and still full of body without being weighed down. I am really happy and will buy again.
I don’t know of any other product that smoothes, tames and moisturises my hair as well as this does! I love the fragrance too, it reminds me of going to the hairdressers (where they also use this range thankfully!). I cannot recommend the oleo-relax range highly enough to people with dry frizzy hair like mine, they really are miracle products.
On my seventh tub – at least. Cannot rate the results this treatment gives highly enough. Yes, it’s pricey. But I will always repurchase – forever. A tiny bit goes a loooong way. There are other things I can live without to be able to have the softest silkiest hair this gives every time. Totally transformed after one use I promise!Waste of money. It only works on the surface of the hair for about a month and does absolutely nothing to repair it, or calm frizz after your hair gets used to it. The smell is too strong and lingers for days. A rather unpleasant smell. My husband didn’t stop complaining until I finally ditched it when I realized it doesn’t work. I’d have ditched him!
I cannot praise this product enough. It truly is nectar for dry hair. The KEY to locking in the moisture and shine with this masque is to dry and flat iron your hair! Almost like a BB, you need to lock the product in! If your hair air drys, you might think the masque didn’t work. For me, I have to use heat to seal in the 3 oils in the product. My hair has been miraculously transformed, and I use this weekly. The health, condition, and shine is my hair is unbelievable.
This is a very rich, creamy mask, with a smooth almost, as some have said ‘plasticky’ texture. Even though it’s generally more suitable for people with very dry, thick, (obviously frizzy) hair, I’ve always used it (sparingly) on my fine hair – but as an overnight hair treatment.
I have bought the ‘night’ version of this, Kérastase Oléo-Relax Nuit which is applied to dry hair, but I’m not convinced you need a separate mask for night-time, in my opinion, this one does exactly the same job. I’m not sure the good people at Kérastase (owned by L’Oréal) would agree as they’ve got units to shift, but as I’ve used this product on and off for over 10 years, I think I know best.
I shampoo and thoroughly towel dry my hair ie I keep ‘patting’ it with the towel until it is almost dry. I apply the product, although this time two walnut sized blobs, about two inches from the roots, massage and comb through. I wrap my head in clingfilm and put a shower cap on top, it’s an attractive look.
The mask is heavily scented and I know a lot of people find it too cloying. It reminds me of an expensive hair salon and I agree that it does linger on the hair even after a lot of rinsing, but personally, I like that. In the morning I rinse and rinse and rinse.
The oils and the silicone not only smooth and tame the hair (the frizzies) but none of the other Kérastase hair masks I’ve used leave the hair as soft as this mask does. Be warned though, that the hair will in fact be so soft, it won’t hold a style and will be a little on flat side. However, if you are tempted to use your straighteners, then I will admit that the hair will look super shiny. It’s the heat reacting to the oils.
Oléo-Relax is a last resort for hair that won’t respond to other moisturising masks.
As I’m heading towards the menopause (oh joy!), my hair is behaving very badly. I’ve noticed this particularly in the last few months. I’ve switched around shampoos, going for lighter formulations – always have a bottle of Johnson’s Baby Shampoo in the bathroom cabinet. I use it for cleaning my make up brushes and for my hair when I think it needs a ‘rest’ from heavier shampoo.
I’ve now discovered that my hair can’t tolerate such rich conditioning products, it goes limp and greasy, so I now use this mask sparingly, once every two months. I would still highly recommend this mask though if your hair is dry and frizzy – a ‘hazelnut’ sized blob for after shampoo conditioning and two walnut sized ones for an overnight treatment.
It IS expensive, but this 200ml pot will last absolutely ages. A gorgeous, luxury treat for parched hair in need of a little tender loving care.
